Why Chiropractors Are Failing And 7 Steps To Make 2014 Your Best Year Ever!

Motivational minute 2012

“Why Chiropractors Are Failing And 7 Steps To Make 2014 Your Best Year Ever!”

Every day I get to meet chiropractors from all walks of life; varying techniques, styles of practice and philosophical ownership abound.  It has becomes very apparent after speaking to hundreds over my last 14 years in coaching, that there appears to be 7 common  threads that weave between successful and struggling doctors. There are doctors who are “crushing it” and doctors who are struggling to  make ends meet.

Can I share my observations?  In a profession that is still one of the best kept secrets in the world, we ALL should have a truly waiting list practice, serving hundreds of patients weekly.

Here’s my secret list of 7:

Years ago I gained profound insight from Tony Robbins, that VISION is central to everything in your practice and life.  You get what you focus on daily. Steve Jobs once said that only 3% of people on the planet are dedicated to designing a life of their dreams.  REALLY?  Only 3%?!  What if you sat down one Saturday morning, turned off the television and wrote out a vision of how you’d like to see your life and practice.  The greater the vision is, the greater the purpose will ensue.

On Purpose

These doctors have a driving HUNGER.  Their “WHY” is so great, that they arrive early and grab a front row seat, ask a lot of “pain in the ass” questions, study tenaciously, pursue relentlessly and don’t give up when they fall.  Their purpose is hell bent on serving people…period.  That’s what living is…finding a purpose in life greater than you!  Finding a purpose that is spirit centric in serving others, knowing the universe will give back 10 fold.

They understand that they are running a business.  They have outlined their value system of integrity, impeccable service, honesty and fair exchange.  They take a break at the end of every month and analyze their profit and loss statement and ensure they have a profit.  They re-invest and understand that in today’s “busyness” of business…they must stay ahead of the curve…and the competition.

Market Themselves

I have a client in Laval, Quebec who knows his exact return on investment of every marketing tool he uses.  I love this guy, because he is willing to invest a dollar in order to get $5 back.  He understands he is running a business, has set up a 12 month marketing calendar game plan and has witnessed a 300% growth in his practice.  A true winner!

Train Like a Freak

In the popular book, “Power Of Full Engagement”, Jim Loehr outlines that the best athletes in the world play full out…then rest and train.  They get into rituals of focusing on strengthening key elements of their game, training on it, then resting.  My best clients train 15-30 minutes per day on their practice needs, have team training weekly and work out like an Olympian…because they want to get the most out of practice and life. (Pssst! Don’t forget to train your team! )

(P.S. Join me for my One Day Intensive in Toronto on February 8, 2014)

Take breaks

B.J. Palmer use to say, “Don’t take yourself too damn seriously”.  Ever meet someone who was so damn serious that they were toxic?  I encourage my clients to pencil in a week holiday every quarter…at a minimum.   A family vacation, a retreat, just you and your spouse.  Life isn’t meant to be worked through, but LIVED through.  What’s the meaning of working your ass off only to die rich and miserable.  You’ll quickly discover that you will come back refreshed, rejuvenated and will quite possibly see practice growth.

Have No Fear

dr mike_firewalk

Fear is the great barrier that minimizes many a man.  It’s always been the number one reason most doctors fail.  A fear of acceptance, success, what others will think or say…will often retard one’s true desired outcomes in life. The questions you need to ask yourself is, “What do I stand to LOSE but living in fear?”, and “What do I stand to GAIN when I get over it?”  It’s why as a certified fire walker, I take people across hot burning coals.  If they can walk across fire…they can do anything in life…even succeed in practice.

Motivational Minute – Successful People: 8 Self-Limiting Behaviors They Avoid

Motivational minute 2012
Happy New Year! I wish YOU and ALL my readers your BEST YEAR in 2014…in all the 8 pillars of life.  I wanted to start my 2014 blogs with this great article from Forbes.com on self-limiting behavior.
It reminded me of Tony Robbin’s teachings on creating your own destiny.  Nothing like finding your passion, getting your ass out of bed and taking some massive action to create your own outcome.
Successful businesswoman
In my work, I’ve been fortunate to learn from amazingly successful, impactful professionals and entrepreneurs.  I’m defining “success” here as achieving what matters most to YOU, individually and authentically – not as some objective measure of outer wealth, accomplishment or achievement.
I’ve noted that people who love what they do for a living and have created tremendous success and reward, not only engage continuously in life-supporting behaviors, but also avoid certain negative actions and mindsets that other, less successful people habitually get lost in.
Observing people in action who are living fully on their terms and absolutely loving it, I’ve seen how they think, react, interrelate, problem solve, and lead.  I’ve applied these lessons to my own life, and to those I coach.
time to change

The 8 Self-Limiting, Negative Behaviors Successful People Avoid Are:

1.    Engaging in “below the line” thinking

“Below the line” thinking refers to a particular mindset that shapes how you view the world in a limiting way.  It leads to your believing that what’s happening to you is outside your control and everyone else’s fault – the economy, your profession, your boss, your spouse, etc.  Below the line thinking says, “It’s not fair what’s happening, and I don’t have what it takes to overcome these challenges. I didn’t expect this and I can’t handle it.”  Above the line thinking, on the other hand, says, “I clearly see the obstacles ahead, and I’m addressing them with open eyes.  I’m accountable for my life and my career, and I have what it takes to navigate through this successfully.  If I fail, I’ll still wake up tomorrow exactly who I am, and will have learned something critical.”

2.    Mistaking fantastical wishful thinking for action
Successful professionals pursue outcomes that flow organically from their current actions. Unsuccessful individuals attach to fantasies that may relieve them momentarily of their situational pain but have no basis in reality.  For instance, I’ve heard from corporate professionals who share, “Kathy, I really hate my job and desperately want to leave.  I’ve been wanting to write a book and become a motivational speaker for several years now.  What’s your advice?”  I’ll respond, “OK, great.  Are you writing and speaking?” and more often than not, the answer will be, “Uh…no.”  You can’t write a book if you’re not writing anything, and you can’t speak in public if you haven’t developed any material to speak about.   It’s critical to take bold action toward your visions, in order to create success.  Successful people develop huge goals too, but they crush them down into smaller, digestible (but courageous) action steps that they then build on, which leads naturally to the end goal they’re pursuing.
3.    Remaining powerless and speechless
Successful people are in touch with their power, and are not afraid to use it and express it.  They advocate and negotiate strongly for themselves and for others, and for what they care about, and don’t shy away from articulating just how they stand apart from the competition.  They know how they contribute uniquely and the value they bring to the table.  In addition, they don’t wait to bring up concerns – they tackle challenges head on, speaking about them, with calm, poise and grace.  They don’t hide from their problems.  And they don’t perceive themselves as hapless victims.
4.    Putting off investing in themselves
I see this behavior over and over in those who feel thwarted and unsuccessful – they are incredibly reluctant to invest time, money and energy in themselves and their own growth.  They are comfortable only when putting other people’s needs ahead of their own.  They’ll make any excuse for why now is NOT the time to invest in themselves or commit to change.  They feel guilt, shame and anxiety over claiming “I’m worth this.”  Successful people don’t wait – they spend money, time and effort on their own growth, because they know, without doubt it will pay off – for themselves and everyone around them.
5.    Resisting change
Successful people don’t break themselves against what is or drown in the changing tides.  They go with the flow.  They follow the trends, and embrace them.  They are flexible, fluid and nimble.  They react to what’s in front of them, and improvise deftly.   Those who are unsuccessful bemoan what is appearing before them, and stay stuck in the past or in what they “expected,” complaining about how life is not what it should be and why what is feels so wrong.
6.    Honoring other people’s priorities over their own
Successful people know what matters most to them – their priorities, values, concerns, and their mission and purpose.  They don’t float aimlessly on a sea of possibility – they are masters of their own ship and know where they want to head, and make bold moves in the direction of their dreams.  To do this, they are very clear about their top priorities in life and work, and won’t be waylaid by the priorities and values of others.  In short, they have very well-defined boundaries, and know where they end and others begin.  They say “no” to endeavors and behaviors (and thinking) that will push them off track.  They know what they want to create and the legacy they want to leave behind in this lifetime, and honor that each day.
Those who doubt themselves, lack trust in their own gut or instincts, or second-guess themselves continually find themselves far from where they want to be.  Successful professionals believe in themselves without fail.  Sure, they acknowledge they have “power gaps” or blind spots, and areas that need deep development.  But they forgive themselves for what they don’t know and the mistakes they’ve made, and accept themselves.  They keep going with hope and optimism, knowing that the lessons from these missteps will serve them well in the future.
7.    Searching for handouts and easy answers
I can often tell from the first contact I have with someone if they’ll be likely to succeed in their new entrepreneurial venture and career, or not.  How? By the nature of their expectations, and how they set out to fulfill them.  Here’s an example – if a complete stranger reaches out to me expecting free help without considering what she may offer in return, it’s a bad sign.  Let’s say she asks something like this: “I’m launching my new business and wondered if you can give me some advice. I can’t pay you because I’m a startup, but I hope you can help me anyway.”
From this one email, I know she’s not ready to make it happen in her own business.  Why? Because successful professionals (and those destined to be) wouldn’t consider asking for help in this way.  Instead, they: 1) understand that they have something important and valuable to offer in any situation, 2) are willing and happy to share or barter that in return for what they want, and 3) they treat others exactly as they would like to be treated.
8.    It takes some hard work!
Successful professionals are respectful, resourceful, curious, competent, tenacious, and they figure out how to get the help they need without asking for handouts.  That doesn’t mean they don’t seek assistance when and where they need it , or make use of the many *free resourcesavailable to them.  It means that they don’t expect something for nothing.  They treat others equitably and fairly and know they deserve the same.
Successful professionals realize that if they’re not willing to pay for products and services they want, then others won’t be willing to pay them (yes, it works like karma).  They also know that their success is directly proportionate to the effort they put in.   Most of all, they understand there are no short cuts or easy answers on the road to success.

Dr Mike’s Motivational Minute – Why I like the “F” word

Motivational minute 2012

Yes, I said it, the  dreaded  “F” word…FAILURE!

And I’m learning to love it.  Maybe you heard the saying, “Fail, Forward, Fast”.

We’ve all done it!  Failed!  Somewhere in our lives…  Perhaps it was practice, a marriage, financially or with friends!  We’ve all been there, and I guarantee it’s probably one of your best friends, you just don’t know it yet or haven’t fully accepted it yet!!

I listen to this great audio program from “Success” magazine.  I wanted to create a summary of what some of these top CEO’s were saying and what they had learned..and why some of the greatest and wealthiest have made it big, through failure.

It’s why I believe that many entrepreneurs, people, doctors and potentials never realize their full potential.  Mediocrity loves company.  Our daily bump and grind, 9 to 5, ground hog day experiences that prevent us from trying…from failing…from learning and thus succeeding. I guess that life is about choices.  Here’s what the best have to say about Failure:

  1. Go fail a lot and fast.

  2. The key to success is massive failure…whoever can fail the most and  fastest wins. Fail Big! Babe Ruth would not have hit record home runs, without first swinging the bat.  He also struck out more than most players.
  3. Failure offers the opportunity to tweak and renew…The Kaizen principle of constant and never ending improvement is based on learning from one’s mistakes.
  4. Failure creates opportunity for exhilarating success.
  5. It’s not whether you fail, but are you content with failure…and did you learn from failure to grow with success.
  6. Failure allows you to super size your dreams…to “Think Big!”

  7. If it were not possible to failure, it would  be impossible to succeed.
  8. Failure can be seen as a blessing.  The Yin/Yang principle that governs all universal laws, the plus and the minus.
  9. See failure not as a breakdown, but as a breakthrough.

  10. Never give your power away to an event that hasn’t occurred. Your past does not predict your future.
  11. Failure allows you to shift from GOOD to GREAT.

  12. When you “fail”, ask yourself these 4 Questions:

    I.        What is good about this?
II.        How can I use this as a positive force in the next 24-48 hours.
III.        What are the top 2-3 gifts that this failure has given me.
IV.        What skill or strategy do I need to enhance to prevent this from happening again.

Whether you Fail or Succeed, you can discover
how to continue on your “fall forward fast!”

Motivational Minute – Keys To Staying Grateful in Daily Life

Motivational minute 2012
It’s the beginning of the GIVING season, and a big question I get from hundreds of chiros, is how to maintain that state of thankfulness when we’re growing, plateauing or sliding in practice.

It’s not unusual that we tend to tie our identity to the volume of our practice, income that we make, or number of new patients that we see.  So true isn’t it?  You have a great, record month… you’re pumped!  You’re on top of the world!  You have a bad month and you blame the staff, your mother in law, the lazy associate, the dog and the economy.

A number of years ago I came across a small book that was recommended to me by one of my coaches.  “Mastery” by George Leonard, follows martial artist who have  discovered how to stay “zenned”.  It’s a perfect metaphor for Chiropractors who attach their identity to their practice.

Those of you who follow quantum physics and the law of attraction, will understand that wallowing in a state of fear, worry, jealousy or hatred will only bring about more of that which you don’t want.  Yet, by being in a state of love and gratitude, by vibrating every cell in your body to the universal frequency of love and gratitude…will attract more of that which you ask from the universe.

Start your day by focusing on meditation in a silent place. Try it for 14 days straight, regardless of the status of your practice…and I guarantee
something magical will happen.

By following lessons learned from this book and lessons learned from other masters, anyone can follow 6 simple rules to mastering their lives:

1. Maintain your state and  grateful for all that you are and currently have…whether you are growing, plateauing or seeing a slow down in your practice…or life

2. FILL your emotional fuel tank DAILY

3. BEcome an emotional factory…always outpouring /serving/pay it forward

4. Make your primary values emotional based…LOVE, GRATITUDE, and FORGIVENESS

5. Leave the EGO BEHIND…and live a SPIRIT CENTRIC life MEDITATE OR PRAY with your vision board daily

Motivational Minute – When Life Hands You A Bowl Of Sh*t!

Motivational minute 2012

I was joking with a good friend of mine, Dr. Pat Gentempo, how busy shakers and movers like ourselves often have to deal with getting handed bowls of shit on a regular basis. And sometimes it’s more like a barrel full or even a pool full! Ever have one of those days?  Nothing friggin right goes your way!

We’ve all been there!  Financial! Marital! Health! The list is endless!  So what do you do? Suck it up? Take the blue pill and crawl back under the covers?  Well my friend…here’s some insight from a tough mother whose been through hell and back…and believe me…stick to your guns, because someday soon you’ll get that bowl of cherries.

  1. Know Your Identity… Because others judge you, attack you, are jealous  or gossip about you…stand your ground!  It’s been my experience that these detractors are born with a scarcity mentality and low self esteem. They’re that 20% you’ll never please, so focus on the 80% that are listening or following you.
  2. Take a New Perspective…Did you eat today, sleep in your own bed, have a hot shower and not have bombs drop on your head? Then you’ve got it good.  We live in the top 1% of people in the great village of the world; a life of privilege and abundance. Count your blessings and stop focusing on the small negatives!
  3. Maintain your state of love and gratitude. I firmly believe in a statement by Tony Robbins that says, “He who maintains his state…WINS!”. This is so true, that when met with adversity or a
    negative environment…keep your cool.
  4. Keep Your Eye On The Prize…I know that if you want something bad enough in life, you need to go after it and don’t let the naysayers pull you away from your main objectives in life.  Steve Jobs was kicked out of his own company, broke and depressed. Yet he knew what he wanted in life, became relentless and kept his eye on it. Pixar! Apple! And even inventing new technologies to realize his dreams. I think we’re all glad that he did!
  5. A Life of Servitude…If your life’s purpose is to help people and you’re not harming anyone…then march on. The greatest life one can live is one of servitude. If you have a gift to share to better others, then go out there and share it!  A spirit centric life is one of the most gratifying you could live.
  6. Don’t Take Yourself Too Damn Seriously…Life was meant to be enjoyed and not one of struggle, worry or fear. I take 2 thirty minute breaks per day to walk my dog Chewy and reconnect with nature.  It calms the mind, relaxes the soul and allows you to manifest that which you want in life.
  7. 10 Minutes To Manifest…Start your day with the power of attraction and positive affirmations to attract more of what you want in life and less of the negative and mundane. Give it a test for 14 days straight. I know you will surprise yourself.

Old Japanese Proverb – “Fall 7, Stand 8”

Motivational minute 2012

Have you ever failed at something in life!  You know you tried once or twice and give up.  Maybe a new sport, technique in practice, marketing tool.  Could you have imagined if Edison gave up after trying the first 5, 10 or even 20 filaments.  When asked how he felt about failing 1000 times while experimenting for the light bulb, he quipped,

“I didn’t fail 1000 times, it just took me 1001 times to discover it was the carbon filament to make the bulb work!”

Two weeks ago I bought a wake surf board.  I thought it was so cool how these guys could pop up on their boards behind a wake boat and ride a wave without any tow rope.   I watched.  I learned.  I tried 1000 times…and after taking in water in every orifice in my body…I found this “SWEET SPOT” on the wake.

It’s that place of effortless where all your skills from life conjoin to a moment of knowing.  Sort of like adjusting high volume and then you suddenly reside in your zen garden, flowing effortlessly between patients where the magic of your hands takes over.

Life is like that isn’t it?   We try a new art.  We fall!  We get up and then choose; to try again or to quit! It’s at that moment where we differentiate between success and failure.  Those willing to stand up one more time than those who fall.   Those willing to feel the pain, the agony of defeat and those willing to stand on either principle or vision.   Those who crave success have their eye on the prize and not on the naysayers, nor the pundits.

Where are you falling in life or practice?  Where’s your hunger?  Is your vision strong enough to pursue that sweet spot in life?   Or perhaps you’re looking for direction!  Maybe to join a family of like minded, successful people who are driven by that same hunger that you crave.

My Fire Walker Pierce and the Meaning of Vision

A number of years ago, I got certified in fire walking from a man named Tolly Burkan of Sonoma, California. He’s the same instructor who taught Tony Robbins and T. Harv Eker and a number of other celebrity speakers.

Fire walking is a “mind over matter” personal empowerment tool, designed to demonstrate that you really can do anything in life….as long as you believe.

I’m an advocate of personal empowerment and have been for over 20 years. It solidifies one’s resolve, creates clarity in your vision, and helps eliminate the fears that prevent you from truly fulfilling your potential.

It’s instrumental in my “Master Within” seminar, that I run every year.

After I prep the coals (which can be up to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit), I walk them first, then allow my chiropractic son Pierce (13 years old, 6’2″, and better looking than Bieber) to walk the coals next.   He’s a product of chiropractic…adjusted at birth and weekly now, non-vaccinated, breast fed and organically nourished today. These are the indigo children, who are in tune with their “innate”, that voice inside that is clear as long as there is no interference.

As Pierce lines up to walk the coals, he’ll often hesitate and step back 2 or 3 times before he is ready. He’ll look at me across the 12 foot pit, focused, intense and you can see that gleam of certainty in his eyes, before he takes his first step across the coals. He’ll effortless walk across into my arms and sometimes walk 4 or 5 times more.

He leads the pack of doctors and C.A.’s who follow right after him.

I’m really proud of him, because he is pure innate. No fear! Tackles life head on! He just completed a 10 day, 200 km canoe/portage trip in Algonquin Park, full of mosquitoes, black flies and crappy food. Tough kid!

In our debrief that evening, I review with all my guests, the significance and meaning in their lives as it pertains to the fire walk.   I purposely then ask Pierce, what he got out of it. (He’s really a plant because he’s done this 3 times and over 12 fire walks with me).

“Dad, when my head saw the coals, I was thinking of getting burned…but when that voice in my heart was greater…that’s when I knew I was ready to walk!”

WOW! You could hear a pin drop, as the doctors took copious notes on that one.

It brings to memory one of the most impactful quote I’ve ever heard from Dr. John Demartini:

“When the voice and the vision on the inside, is greater than the voice of the detractors on the outside, that’s when you have mastered your life!”

It’s not unusual that my guests who complete the “Master Within” weekend, witness massive growth in their practices and lives. Quantum shifts in volume, income and life enjoyment.

What holds us back in life and from reaching our truly full potential, is lack of clarity and vision, fear of the unknown, conformity and of course detractors. Could it now be YOUR TIME to cut loose and be all you could and can be? Perhaps yes!

Watch for my next “Master Within“, scheduled for sometime in 2014 and unleash that giant inside. If a 13 year old can do it…so can you.

In the meantime, consider this an invitation to start your own journey by joining me at “Prosperity“, our signature seminar to give you the technique and tools of abundance for your practice.

Motivational Minute – Buddies, Boating & The 7 Secrets To Practice Success

Motivational minute 2012

Yup! That’s them! Two of my best friends in the world. We spent last weekend at my cottage drinking brown pops, barbequing, boating and…talking about chiropractic!

That’s what you do, whether you’re married to one or just hanging around chiropractors.
“If there is a better formula to build a chiropractic clinic, then I would want to see it!“, commented Dr. Mankal
We discussed at length the basic tenets to building a successful practice. The elements to make it work.   The marketing and procedures, systems, techniques and technologies. Although we all agreed, that your personality can make or break a practice, here’s a basic list of the 7 key essentials to build a successful practice.

 New Patient Machine

It’s the most common complaint I hear from doctors. “If I only had more new patients, my practice would be awesome….” And I agree to a certain extent. It is essential, but only part of the puzzle. If you can’t attract more then try doubling your PVA.

The Doctor’s Report

Or the “spinal care workshop” or whatever you want to call it. It is so critical to have, that doctor’s whose practice evaluations are void of a great Doctor’s Report, probably have a PVA half of what it could be. Try it for a month and let me know the results. With a doctor’s report, your PVA typically doubles!

 Care Plans

Remember this statement, “Your PVA will be equal to your AVERAGE recommendations.” So if you can’t get it up…your numbers, then start recommending more. And ask yourself this one questions, “How often DO YOU get adjusted?” Nuff said!

 Corrective Care

Consider studying a technique like CBP or PSC. Structural corrective care is validated in the research, because relief care isn’t and no study shows that once you’re out of pain, you are healthy. Besides, once they’re out pain….they are usually gone.

Once the symptoms, range of motion, leg length, palpation findings, ortho testing and posture are normalized…what do you have to rely on in objective findings? Structural changes can be clearly shown on an x-ray unit and neurological changes can easily be shown with a Insight Subluxation Station. Governing boards allow it and the most important question is, “What about the other 90% of the nervous system once the pain is gone?”

 Team Culture

Did you know that there are 10 keys to a successful team culture in your practice? Do you know and embrace them all? Do you have a high turnover rate with CA’s coming and going? That’s the benefit of having a coach!

 Wellness Care

A seasoned doctor, whose practice I evaluated 8 years ago, grew $10,000 per month in 1 month. How much had he left on the table over those 25 years? Ouch!   You’ll get adjusted for life right? So will I! Then why shouldn’t your patients? Consider at least a wellness plan 2.

Motivational Minute – Get Into Your BEST Shape NOW!

Motivational minute 2012

Jim Unger, the Herman cartoonist, drew a hilariously ironic cartoon of a grossly overweight M.D. sitting across from his patient asking,

“Are you eating right and getting plenty of exercise?”

Do you think it’s all worth it?

All those greens, protein shakes, eggs, and salmon steaks. You know…that Paleolithic diet. The,  “If you can grow it or kill it, then you can eat it” attitude.

Have you considered your age lately? Are you feeling it in the body after all those years of adjusting? Maybe body weight is increasing?  Maybe you are off your regular diet…and the energy just isn’t the same anymore?

Most importantly, what are you doing about it?

There are 4 keys to life mastery, that I know are absolutely essential for
wellness based doctors to master. The physical, nutritional, mental and spiritua. When combined with a positive outlook on life…everything is possible.

Here are a few reasons why:

1. You need to look the part!

If you are talking like a wellness doc, then start walking the part. We must become a leading example and not a contradiction.

2. When you look it, you feel it

Your emotions, how you treat others, your outlook on life can be directly reflected by how you look and feel inside, because the end result of taking care of your temple, resonates in positive energy to others.

3.Our health care system is dying!

Treatment of cancer, heart disease and diabetes is NOT health care. The new revolution of wellness care, lead by the chiropractic profession focuses on being fit, eating right, thinking well and getting adjusted. Are you on board?

4.Your old age!

It is estimated that 50% of us will suffer in the last 10 years of life. Study after study of healthy, thriving cultures, have shown that paleo diets, exercise, positive attitudes and purpose in life are essential to staying well. Motivational Minute – The 100% Energy Day

Motivational minute 2012
The 100% Energy Day

The most common body signal, or complaint that you hear from your patients is fatigue. Interestingly, I find it’s also the most common challenge with doctors of chiropractic. Let me share with you, my TOP 6 Energy Producing Foods and Supplements that allow me to rock my day from 5:20am to 11:00pm. TRY IT! I think you’ll LOVE it!

  1. Start your morning with Greens First.

My first power drink is always Greens First with a teaspoon of whey protein with every morning workout. It alkalizes the body, provides over 100 nutrients while detoxifying at the same time.  I add the protein to help prevent dry-heaves while working out on an empty stomach.

  2. Post-Workout drink

Within 30 minutes of your morning workout, always have a protein drink with at least 30 grams of whey protein. I love to mix in fruits like strawberries and banana. The secret to this, is adding a teaspoon of glutamine. This is an amino acid transporter which cell volumizes, stimulates the immune system and helps fight fatigue. This works phenomenally well to maintain your energy, especially if you’re adjusting in the morning.

  3. Breakfast

Your first meal of the day should always include proteins. Eggs eggs and even an omelet with vegetables like spinach or avocados. Avoid high sugar foods like cereals. Choose oatmeal instead without dairy – almond milk, is acceptable. I like mixing in nuts and cranberries in my oatmeal.

  4. High Energy Water Content Rich Foods.

Graze every 3 hours with salads and proteins like chicken, salmon or lean beef. I avoid carbohydrates after noon and focus on food combining with greens/vegetables and a protein. Try salmon in the evening with a salad and you’ll feel amazing! I snack on nuts and raw foods like carrots and occasional protein bars.

  5. Smoothies throughout the day.

Here’s a great smoothie recipe from one of my top clients, Drs Michele Bernatchez and Francois Poirier. They gave this to me last week at our One Day Intensive Training in Montreal, and it was TOTALLY awesome! I recommend adding a whey based protein with BCAA’s (this should be high in L-lysine as an 8:1 ratio).

    Chia seeds

    Budwix mix (flax,…)

    Whole oats

    Any raw nuts

    One banana

    Raw Spinach

    Omega 3 oil

  6. Summer Salads.

I love salads with protein and live off of these during the summertime! Try Michele and Francois’ salad below. It’s one of the best salads I’ve had in a long time with an all-natural dressing of oranges and mango!

Salad dressing made in my Vitamix blender:

    2 small clementines (oranges)

    One mango

    White wine vinegar/olive oil(1:2)

    Mixed Greens
    Strawberries and raspberries
    Red onion

P.S. Avoid eating 3 hours prior to retiring. I recommend popcorn if you’re hungry. If you’re working out aggressively, then you may want to consider a slow release based protein to consume  as an 8 ounce protein shake prior to sleeping. The one I love is, Isobolic by NutraBolics – it helps you sleep and recuperate during the night.
